Once upon a time ... writing picture books for young children
Penny runs One Day, Weekend and Mini Workshops open to anyone who wants to explore or develop their picture book writing skills.
Picture books help small children to understand the world through all of their developing senses and story ideas are all around us when we look through their eyes.
At the One Day and Weekend workshops we will discuss themes and characters and how to develop them. We will look at how picture books work and what makes a great story; how to edit to make every word count, and the process of how to get published with insight into agents, publishers and the global picture book market.
If you have a picture book text that you are working on or have an idea for a story, then bring it with you. If you haven’t any idea how to begin then we can get you started. You don’t need to be able to draw or illustrate to write a successful picture book text – but if you can that’s great too. Between us we will spark ideas, identify messages, seek out emotional resonance and depth, and paint pictures with words.
Penny also runs Mini Workshops with an initial meeting and creative discussion, either in person or via Skype, with four follow-up sessions on email. Through a series of personalised exercises she will work with you as you create and develop your story, as well as help you develop your characters, setting, audience, format and style, providing a lot of encouragement along the way!
